Description

The signature sweet of L'Aquila: torrone tenero al cioccolato aquilano, a soft chocolate nougat that has been a Christmas tradition in the city since the 19th century. Rich cocoa, honey and whole Italian hazelnuts, under a thin wafer.

What to expect. This torrone is soft, never hard. It cuts easily and melts slowly, with whole hazelnuts in every slice. If you only know the hard white nougat, this will be a delicious surprise.

How to enjoy it. Cut thin slices and serve them with espresso after dinner, on a holiday dessert tray or as a gift for someone who loves Italy.

Perfectly imperfect. Each bar is cut by hand, so the hazelnuts fall a little differently in every piece. That is the beauty of real artisan torrone.

It is a seasonal specialty with a naturally short shelf life, which is why we bring it in fresh batches.

Why is torrone a Christmas tradition?

In L'Aquila, soft chocolate torrone has been made for the holidays since the 19th century. For many families in Abruzzo, Christmas is not complete without it.

How should I serve it?

Cut thin slices with a sharp knife and serve with espresso, a dessert wine or on a holiday cookie tray.

Why did they wrap it in paper that stick to the chocolate

Dear customer: We’re very sorry you had this experience and apologize for the misunderstanding. The thin paper covering the chocolate is actually edible wafer paper (ostia), traditionally used in European sweets like nougat (torrone).

Its purpose is to keep the nougat from sticking, help with slicing, and provide a smooth, clean surface. It’s made from potato starch, water, and oil, and is completely safe to eat.

There should have been a sticker on the product noting this, and it’s also listed in the ingredients. We recognize that our website and social media didn’t make this detail as clear as it should be — and we’ll work harder to improve that.
