Before they were called pizzelle in America, they were ferratelle in Abruzzo. These Italian waffle cookies are one of the oldest sweet traditions of the region, and in L'Aquila they are still made the old way: hand-kneaded dough, pressed and cooked on cast iron, one at a time.
What to expect. Our ferratelle are thicker and more rustic than the thin pizzelle most Americans know, with a satisfying crunch and a clean, simple flavor with a touch of vanilla. No anise, no added colorings or flavorings: just real ingredients.
Perfectly imperfect. Because they are made by hand, every ferratella is a little different in size and color, and one box may hold 10 pieces while another holds 11. The weight is always guaranteed: at least 230 g (8.11 oz).
Enjoy them on their own with coffee, spread with jam, honey or chocolate, crumbled over gelato, or tucked into a lunchbox. Like all real baked goods, they have a naturally short shelf life.
